There’s a new store in town, bringing a fresh and vibrant approach to Nantucket’s various collection of shops. Young, enthusiastic, and ever-stylish owner Laura Elkman opened her beachy chic boutique, Dakota, this past April on Old South Wharf. A store unlike any other on the island, Laura stocks a colorful collection of custom and handmade pieces, from jewelry to dresses and tops, to handbags, shoes, gifts, and accessories for both women and men.
Laura came up with the idea of opening a store in February, signed the lease in March, and was open by the end of April. She named the store after her Golden Retriever, Dakota, who loved the beach. Laura is a small business owner who supports other small businesses, working with local designers (Ellie Kai who makes many of her custom dresses and skirts is based on the Cape) to create unique clothing and jewelry just for Dakota. Even though 90% of the store’s inventory is exclusive to or handmade especially for Dakota, their prices are reasonable. There is something here for everyone, and you know you’ll look stylish whether heading to the beach, the brewery, or the Boarding House.
