If you’ve spent any time at all on Nantucket this summer, you know it has been a hot one. All the surprising amounts of sun we’ve seen has driven people to bask in their air-conditioned cars and take a pass on the bike rides, so another thing you probably noticed was the increase in traffic. With September comes cooler weather, making this month the ideal time to get back on two wheels.

Nantucket is a place like none other. For more than a century it has been a safe-harbor for the arts, and as a result countless beautiful things have blossomed. Endless views and vistas, celebrated summers, and harsh, unforgiving winters translate into verse, poetry, paintings, prose, and plays. The island has also been a beautiful and iconic backdrop for film.
I have a kayak.
The kayak is a beautiful boat; outfitted with pedals and a rudder, an ocean keel, and two watertight compartments. Once in the ocean, it will glide and keep its line through waves and water.
I haven’t used it in years.
