Nantucket’s natural light can be extraordinary. From the gentle glow of an island sunrise to the “golden hour” just before sunset, the light is soft and diffused, thanks to the clear air. Other times of day, when the sun is lower in the sky, the light takes on a warm, almost ethereal quality, and the interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and tranquility.
Artist members of the Artists Association of Nantucket have captured the beauty of this natural light in Bathed in Light, AAN’s newest exhibition in their award-winning Big Gallery. The show is on display through Monday, August 26th.
This exhibition’s theme encouraged AAN artists to highlight the subjects and themes they were most drawn to, all while being inspired by Nantucket’s serene ambiance. AAN’s Artistic Director Robert Frazier explains that Bathed in Light “celebrates the unique visual atmosphere of our island—the changes in light, shifts in weather, and the moments of dramatic shadow across our streets, harbors, and moors.”
Located on the second floor of the Thomas H. Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf, the Big Gallery is the perfect place to showcase local artwork of all media, with its lofty ceilings and tall windows. The Big Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10-5 and Sundays from 12-4.
