At 7 pm on Halloween night, Frankenstein, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch, will be the second encore performance by the Metropolitan Opera and London’s National Theatre to be shown in Nantucket’s Dreamland Theater. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for children and seniors.
This performance is part of an exciting new programming initiative by Nantucket Arts Council and the Nantucket Dreamland Foundation to bring the Metropolitan Opera and London’s National Theatre to Nantucket audiences. Eventually the performances will be simulcast in HD at the same time as the actual performance. With satellite dishes approved by the HDC, Dreamland staff is busy preparing for the installation and subsequent live-in-HD broadcasts. “In the meantime,” executive director Melissa Murphy explained, “we are fortunate to have the technology in our state-of-the-art theater to be able to host pre-recorded broadcasts and start the season with the rest of the theaters nation-wide.”
The Nantucket Dreamland Foundation, a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural and intellectual life of Nantucket, found a willing partner in this endeavor with the Nantucket Arts Council, which ensured the project with the largest grant awarded in the Council’s history. In addition, an extremely generous gift was made toward this programming by an anonymous donor.
Stay tuned as The Dreamland will be announcing set dates for additional performances by both the Metropolitan Opera and National Theatre in the near future.
