This Saturday, August 17, Walk Now for Autism Speaks will take place at Jetties Beach. This fundraising walk is a fun-filled, family friendly event that is a powerful force to fund vital research into autism spectrum disorders. Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disorder in the U.S., and Autism Speaks needs more walkers to join the cause. Walkers solicit backers who donate to Autism Speaks.
On the morning of the event at Jetties Beach, there will be several information booths set up where people can learn about island organizations that assist people with disabilities. There will be plenty of fun activities for kids, and everyone will be able to enjoy seeing the real Autism Speaks NASCAR car! Theatre Workshop of Nantucket Artistic Director John Shea will reprise his role as the event emcee. The 1.8-mile route will first take walkers down Bathing Beach Road, and then will continue to North Beach Street and on to Easton Street. The route will finish up by returning to Jetties Beach via Hulbert Avenue. Walker registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; event organizers will say a few words at 9:00 a.m.; and the walk will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
