Celebrate Nantucket’s Preservation Month this June with Nantucket Preservation Trust (NPT). A calendar produced by the NPT includes a list of the month’s events being offered by local businesses and organizations. “Preservation is the Ultimate Green” is the underlying theme of the month-long celebration that will include events, contests, specials and general awareness of preservation efforts. A week –long celebration of preservation, created in 1971 by The National Trust for Historic Preservation, evolved in 2005 to an annual event observed by small towns and cities across the nation. National events include, but are not limited to: architectural tours, educational programs, fundraising events, award ceremonies, demonstrations, and much more. The National Trust for Historic Preservation hopes organizations will work together in a national effort to generate positive enthusiasm towards the cause of preservation.
On Nantucket, Preservation Month will begin and end with a screening of the film, Built on Narrow Lands, directed by Malachi Connolly, President of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust. The film focuses on a time in Cape Cod when houses were built to marry the principles of Bauhaus to the centuries-old local architecture of seaside New England. It will be screened at the Starlight Theater & Café on June 5 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The month will close with a special screening on June 30 at 4 p.m. that will include a Q&A session with the film’s director, light bites, and a cash bar for $30 per person (tickets available on the NPT Web Site).
In addition, the month will include a variety of lectures, tours, specials, events, a children’s scavenger hunt and the Preserve Jar Campaign. Businesses participating in the campaign will display a green preserve jar instructing customers to place their email inside for a free chance to win a basket containing preservation-themed gifts.
