Celebrating 235 Years of Saving Lives

Egan Maritime Institute invites the public to join in commemorating the 235th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard on Monday, August 4, 2025, from 4 to 5 pm at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.

This free, family-friendly event honors the proud history and ongoing service of the U.S. Coast Guard. All are welcome, with special recognition given to active- duty and retired Coast Guard members and their families.

August 4 marks the official birthday of the United States Coast Guard, established in 1790 when Alexander Hamilton founded the Revenue Cutter Service. Originally tasked with enforcing tariffs and preventing smuggling, the service evolved over time and merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service in 1915 to form the modern Coast Guard.

Nantucket is home to U.S. Coast Guard Station Brant Point, whose crew plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of islanders and mariners throughout the year. From conducting search and rescue operations to maintaining navigational aids and responding to offshore emergencies.

The Egan Maritime Institute and Coast Guard Station Brant Point share a longstanding relationship; a partnership grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to maritime heritage and safety. Through collaborative programs, educational outreach, and community engagement, Egan proudly supports the service members who protect Nantucket’s shores.

In addition, Nantucket is fortunate to have many U.S. Coast Guard veterans from Station Brant Point living in our year-round community. These veterans are an essential part of the island’s fabric, and we are honored to recognize their service during this celebration.

All are invited to enjoy complimentary museum admission, light refreshments, and a community gathering in tribute to the Coast Guard’s 235 years of service. To learn more about this event and others, visit eganmaritime.org.
