This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Mitchell’s Book Corner, and they are celebrating throughout the season. On Thursday, June 28, they’ll kick-off the fun with a day of local author signings, giveaways, refreshments, and Mitchell’s memories.
Mitchell’s opened its doors at 3pm on June 28, 1968, and according to Mimi Beman, daughter of the founder Henry Mitchell Havermeyer (grandson of Maria Mitchell’s younger brother): “That memorable first day of bookselling on the corner of Main and Orange Streets was the beginning of a fascinating journey of learning, of triumphs, of a multitude of mistakes, and of growth.”
The journey continues with owner/caretaker Wendy Hudson at the helm. See the calendar in this issue for events on June 28, and pick up next week’s issue for more about this island icon.
