In an effort to foster and enhance the arts and cultural community on Nantucket, representatives from the Artists Association of Nantucket, the Nantucket Arts Council, and ReMain Nantucket are hosting arts leader Kate D. Levin in a public presentation and have invited her to informally meet people interested in contributing to our island’s cultural community. During her talk in the Nantucket Atheneum’s Great Hall on Tuesday, June 3 from 5 to 6:30 pm, she will discuss the value of a cultural community and address ways to foster the arts and culture in communities of all sizes.
Levin is the Cultural Assets Management principal at Bloomberg Associates, a philanthropic consulting firm that collaborates with cities worldwide to improve quality of life for their citizens. Levin also oversees the Arts Program at Bloomberg Philanthropies. Committed to working with organizations of all sizes, she’s been called a “passionate and hard-working advocate for any arts group that is prepared to work hard to create a strong institution.”
“We have initiated this opportunity in order to consider how we, as a community steeped in arts and culture, can develop collaborations and other ways to emphasize the vibrant and colorful nature of Nantucket,” said NAC board president John Miller. “We hope people will join us for a thoughtful conversation and to consider ways to connect ideas, needs, and, yes, dreams for our community.”
“Levin’s expertise in helping small neighborhoods and communities develop robust cultural economies is the principal reason why we thought she’d be a good fit for Nantucket,” said AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “It is our hope that her presentation will inspire us all to seek out ways to expand the reach and significance of the arts here.”
Levin also served as Commissioner of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Managing the largest single arts funder in the U.S., she increased support for cultural organizations, and expanded creative sector participation in economic development, tourism, human service and education initiatives.
