Swim Across America, the national non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for cancer research, will return to Nantucket in a benefit for Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON) through its open water swim on Saturday, August 24 at Jetties Beach. As of press date, more than 120 swimmers are registered to participate.
The net proceeds of Swim Across America Nantucket remain on the island and will directly improve and expand cancer care services to the on-island community twofold. With the funds raised, Nantucket Cottage Hospital will expand its cancer care services to provide regularly visiting, world-class oncologists, a nurse practitioner, and state-of-the-art treatment and patient care. And PASCON will use the funds to develop a designated Cancer Support Program providing patient navigator services and supportive survivorship services for patients, regardless of which stage of cancer they are experiencing.
With a fundraising goal of $150,000, the event will feature one-mile and half-mile swims, as well as a “kid’s splash” for younger participants. The event is capped off with an inspiring awards ceremony honoring the event’s top fundraisers, volunteers, swimmers. and those affected by cancer for whom the swimmers participate. Begun as a relay race in 1987 from Nantucket to Hyannis, Swim Across America has evolved to 15 open water swims and dozens of pool swims around the country.
The open water event will take place at 8 am on August 24. To register or to donate, visit www.swimacrossamerica.org/nantucket2013.
