As a plant ecologist I usually write about the flora and fauna of Nantucket by land. However, I happen to be married to a fisherman. Sometimes I see or hear about something, and it makes me want to learn more. This past weekend, while on a fishing charter, my husband’s client had an unexpected surprise when reeling in a striped bass. Something “big” suddenly tugged on the line. What seemed like a decent-sized bass at first turned into a heavy haul pulling out line demonstrative of something much larger. Just then, maybe 20 feet from the stern of the boat, an 8-foot shark leapt into the air, striper in its jaws. One half of the striper did eventually make it into the boat, but the talk of the crew that day was all about the “giant” shark that trailed them and even came close enough for some great videos. The shark, it turns out, was a porbeagle. Apparently, at least four other boats had similar porbeagle encounters that weekend as humans and sharks “battled” for the available stripers. A common, but exciting sight when fishing offshore.

I Won, You Won, We All Won
Wow, it feels so great to win a fishing tournament. What tournament did I win, you ask? Well, not to brag, but I won the Spring Sea Run Opener tournament. In fact, I’ve won it every year that I’ve fished it. And so did every other participant. This tournament has done an amazing job of getting the local beach fishing community involved in supporting a wide variety of Nantucket charities and scholarship funds. Thus, we all win. Big time!
Off-Season Fishing Adventures
All right, folks, grab a seat and let me tell you a strange tale. It’s a typical Nantucket tale, no doubt about it. And it involves squid, as more than a few great island tales do.
Jaws 50 Years Later
American society was simply not prepared for the impact of the movie Jaws when it arrived 50 years ago. Nope, never saw it coming. Producer Steven Spielberg caught lightning in a bottle and just like that Jaws became the highest grossing movie in history (until another Spielberg flick called “Star Wars” showed up in 1977).
It’s a Family Tradition
“It’s in his blood.”
“He comes by it naturally.”
How many times do we hear someone say things like this? I’m guessing that these are common refrains if you’re hanging out around the University of Texas football field, watching young Arch Manning warming up. Arch, projected to be one of college football’s better quarterbacks this season, is the son of Cooper Manning. Cooper was a football player at one time as well, destined to play for Ole Miss, but a diagnosis of spinal stenosis caused Cooper to leave the game. Cooper went on to have a successful career as an entrepreneur, a slight variation of the quarterback business.
A Day in the Tuna Life
Oh man, what was I thinking to book a 6 am fishing charter on a Saturday? Well, it had to be, as some medical appointments had shuffled my week pretty thoroughly. I somehow woke up a minute before my alarm went off. Now I’m not flexing here, but this ability is something of a superpower. I was fairly beat from bass fishing the night before. Maybe not my wisest decision to go but those stripers aren’t going to catch themselves, right?
Hope Springs Eternal
The first Nantucket striped bass of the year is a very sought-after fish. That first striper signifies that it’s time to get your gear out and get ready for the onslaught of fish that follow. The first bass clearly says that the seasons have changed. The long winter wait is over, better times are coming. Yeah, that first striped bass is an important fish.
