Through August 17, Nancy Colella will be Artists Association of Nantucket’s Artist in Residence at the Visual Arts Center.
This Monday, August 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, Colella will present an evening discussion and slide show about her process and inspiration in AAN’s Visual Arts Center located at 24 Amelia Drive. She will also be teaching a three-day workshop, Modern Painting, August 12- 14 from 9 am to 3 pm and leading a Friday Morning Crit on August 15 from 10 am to 12 noon, where artists of all levels are invited to join this session of constructive feedback and support.
All workshops will be held at the Visual Arts Center, 24 Amelia Drive.

On Thursday, August 7, a festive and educational opening reception and talk will herald the 2025 Hale Juried Exhibition in AAN’s Big Gallery, upstairs in the historic Thomas Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf. The reception is from 5 to 7 pm, “I would like to thank Kaaren and Charles Hale for generously funding a five-year commitment to support the Hale Juried Exhibition and the Hale Award for Excellence,” said Tracey Sears, AAN’s executive director. “We are most grateful for the opportunity they have provided.”
AAN’s artist members whose works are selected for the exhibition will be eligible for First, Second, and Third Place Prizes, as well as for the Hale Award for Excellence awarded by Kaaren Hale.
“Our accomplished juror, Frank Verpoorten, will review submissions from AAN’s artist members and select the final works to be exhibited,” said AAN artistic director Bobby Frazier. “At the opening on August 7, Frank will offer a special presentation about his selection process.”
Verpoorten, an art historian trained in 19th-century European academic art, works extensively with modern and contemporary artists in Southwest Florida. “He has curated and organized more than 100 exhibitions, and we are thrilled to welcome him to Nantucket for this year’s Hale Juried Exhibition,” added Frazier. “It will be exciting to hear him share insights on the work he selected.”
The 2025 Hale Juried Exhibition continues to August 25 in the Big Gallery: the gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
Concurrently, AAN is featuring the 10×10 Exhibition at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, located at 8 Federal Street, on view August 8 through September 1.
