It’s time to take out your magnifying glasses, and keep your eyes peeled because Find Waldo is on Nantucket this month! The fictional character and childhood book phenomenon, “Waldo,” is hiding in more than 20 local businesses during July, waiting to be found.
With his distinctive red-and-white-striped shirt, bobble hat, and glasses, Waldo should be easy to spot. Before you get started on your adventure be sure to stop by Mitchell’s Book Corner at 54 Main Street to pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Nantucket!” passport.
Laura Wasserman, Event Coordinator/ Manager, co-organized the event on Nantucket along with other staff members. The Where’s Waldo challenge was originally started by book publisher Candlewick Press. Wasserman says, “this is just a really fun activity for the kids; they love it and the businesses love it too.”
As July heats up, so will the competition! Participants should be sure to find as many Waldos as possible in order to obtain great prizes. When you have 8 different cards, bring them to Mitchell’s Book Corner and if you are one of the first hundred to do so, you’ll get a Waldo button. Collecting 16 of the possible 20 cards will ensure you a Waldo button and makes you eligible to win the drawing for a 6-book deluxe set of the Waldo books and other great prizes.
Wasserman adds: “this is a fun activity for the kids which is our number one concern, it will hopefully promote reading and interest in books as well as fictional characters, in addition to bringing people into the book store really helping to encourage kids to read.”
On July 31 at 11 am, the challenge concludes with a celebration at Mitchells Book Corner.
