From Grand Ole Opry to Nantucket Blues

The circle in the middle of the stage of the Grand Ole Opry is considered sacred ground in the country music world. The greatest players of that genre have stood in the six-foot circle and performed for millions of adoring fans. The circle was cut from the stage of the hallowed Ryman Auditorium in 1974 and placed in the newly constructed Grand Ole Opry stage, located a few miles outside of downtown Nashville. The Ryman, the original home of the Opry, had fallen on hard times. It needed significant repairs. And the show needed to go on.

Not Your Typical Nantucket Influencer

Dear Diary – please don’t tell anyone but I think I’m turning into an influencer. Is that possible at my advanced age? After all, I’m getting transferred onto Medicare in another couple of months. Was there a box on the sign-up form that said Influencer – check yes or no? If there was, I’m sure I hit no. And rightly so. After all, who in their right mind is going to be influenced by someone who recently asked the doctor who was about to do his colonoscopy to keep an eye out for his missing key fob for his truck? See what I’m saying?

Never look a gift horse in the mouth. A curious saying, right? Evidently it was semi-common back in once-upon-a-time land for one person to grace a friend or relative with a large, four-legged draft animal. The receiver of such a fine gift would be considered rude if they then examined the teeth of their newly acquired horse to determine the resale value of said beast. It’s good to have some context, right?

Thanking Those Who Help along the Way

Teachers are a special breed. They are vital to our society and far too often underappreciated (and underpaid). As in so many things in my life, I remember those who treated me well…and those who didn’t. In fairness, I also remember the ones that I didn’t appreciate enough at the time. I truly regret the times that I acted poorly for those who simply wanted to make me a better person. My two daughters have both grown up to become teachers and I couldn’t be any prouder. It is a noble profession.

My wife and I were able to sneak away for a short trip to Florida last week and boy oh boy did we need it! Life can be a lot at times, and a vacation, even a short vacation, is really important to allow you to reset and get prepared for the next chapter. Yet even as we were lounging in the Sunshine State, I felt a lingering feeling that I was missing something important back on Nantucket. A quick perusal through Instagram and Facebook revealed that my premonition was correct. There was some big stuff going on in the world of Nantucket fishing and yes, indeed, I was missing out.

The “Cheese Touch”

One of my favorite books to read with my daughters way back in once upon a time land was Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Greg Heffley. The Wimpy Kid books are laugh-out-loud funny and completely relatable. The first book in the series introduced me to the dreaded “Cheese Touch,” a curse of sorts that is to be avoided at all costs. I fully understood that the cheese touch exists in reality. Sometimes the dice go cold. Sometimes they simply freeze up, even in a hot August on our beautiful island of Nantucket.
