Toasting Basketmakers with Bubbly & Bourbon

For 2025, the Nantucket Historical Association’s annual summer fundraiser celebrating the rich tradition of Nantucket lightship baskets has an added flavor: a bourbon tasting alongside the bubbly, craft cocktails, and light bites.

Formerly the annual Baskets & Bubbly is now Baskets, Bubbles, & Bourbon and will feature exciting new additions that honor both weavers and collectors. Collector Max Berry will be specially recognized for his outstanding support and dedication to preserving this iconic island craft. In addition, the event will also have an exclusive showcase of other distinguished basket collectors displaying their treasured pieces.

This year, the highly anticipated Baskets, Bubbles, & Bourbon auction features a curated selection of exceptional works from today’s most talented artisans—plus select collaborations with other skilled craftspeople. The auction started online this week at nha.org, featuring unique and stunning items, including an exquisite Nantucket Tree Top Angel woven by Janet Carreau with carvings by artisan Scott Marks, a Footed Nantucket Basket Bowl by Bill Sayle that will look gorgeous on any table, a Scrimshaw Ivory Pendant hand-etched by artist David Lazarus, a Whale Bone Scallop Shell Choker by Paul Johnson, a Nantucket Lightship Basket Champagne Bucket perfect for island parties. The Nantucket lightship basket has a long history on our island. During the early 1800s, they were practical for storage and used as carrying baskets in homes, stores, and workshops. As the island transitioned to a tourist economy in the 1860s, the baskets became a popular keepsake of an island visit. The Nantucket Historical Association is committed to preserving the iconic Nantucket lightship basket craft by enhancing the permanent lightship basket collection, displaying exhibitions, and teaching children and adults the art form. The Nantucket Lightship Basket Fund at the NHA is used solely to carry out this mission and share the history of Nantucket Lightship baskets.

The 2025 Baskets, Bubbles, & Bourbon over 21 event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Friday, June 27 in the beautiful garden of the Hadwen House, 96 Main Street. Tickets are available now (while they last) at nha.org.
