Bringing the American Revolution to Life

The First Oval Office Project

The First Oval Office Project is a one-of-a-kind traveling immersive environment that includes hand-sewn tents and hand-made camp furniture that bring to life the stories of the diverse people and complex events during the years 1775- 1783. This week, Wednesday, July 13 and Thursday, July 14, the Nantucket Historical Association is welcoming the Philadelphia Museum of the American Revolution as they bring this unique display to Nantucket Island.

Visitors will be invited to explore replicas of General George Washington’s tents; examine and try out replica equipment, tools, and uniforms; and engage with living history interpreters. The program will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on both days at the NHA’s Old Mill. This program is family-friendly and free.

An evening lecture with Dr. R. Scott Stephenson, President & CEO of the Museum of the American Revolution, will be held at the Whaling Museum on Wednesday, July 13, at 6 pm. Stephenson will explore the history and significance of General George Washington’s mobile field headquarters, now housed and displayed in Philadelphia’s Museum of the American Revolution, which had a rich and dramatic life following the death of George and Martha Washington, with a remarkable cast of characters from Lafayette to Robert E. Lee to an Episcopal priest. Tickets are available at nha.org.

The NHA will also host a special lecture with author Nathanial Philbrick on Friday, July 15, at 6 pm at the Whaling Museum. During this lecture, Philbrick will dive into his series of books based around the American Revolution, including Bunker Hill, Valiant Ambition, and In the Hurricane’s Eye. Tickets to this lecture are also available at NHA.org.

The NHA’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.
