Women+Wellness

In 2017 a trio of dynamic women on Nantucket—Meryl Bralower, Melanie Sablehaus, and Jeanine Borthwick—engaged with Nantucket Cottage Hospital to spearhead an effort to empower women on the island, visitors and residents, to take charge of their healthcare.

Nantucket Island’s only summer event dedicated exclusively to women’s health returns this month as a free virtual program when Nantucket Cottage Hospital presents the 4th annual Women+Wellness event on Monday, August 24, from 5 to 6 pm.

Amid the stresses of the ongoing global pandemic, many people have expressed feeling overwhelmed, excessively tired, foggy, or just simply under mental strain. They may be experiencing something called “emotional labor,” a phenomenon that involves the exertion of energy for the purpose of addressing other people’s feelings, trying to make them feel comfortable, or seeking to live up to social expectations.

2020 Women+Wellness will feature a virtual panel of Nantucket speakers presenting on what emotional labor is, how to recognize it, and resources to help during these challenging times. The presentation will be followed by a live Q&A.

Sarah Newton, a strong supporter of NCH and a member of the hospital’s Marketing and Development Committee is chair of this year’s event. Panelists will present a trio of topics. Sarah Munsen, Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s Social Services Manager, will discuss “Women and Emotional Labor in the Pandemic Age.” Lera Keller, Doula & Educator at Lera Keller Reproductive Journey Support, will talk about “Preventing Emotional Labor Burnout in Mothers through Support Building and Childbirth Preparation.” And Community Advocate and DEI Consultant Charity Grace Mofsen will present on the topic of “A Moment to a Movement: Sustaining the Emotional Labor.”

This education-focused program is designed to help women make the best decisions they can and to educate the community about resources available at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and its affiliation with the Mass General Brigham healthcare system.
