September Art: Inclusive & Exceptional

Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is delighted to announce the opening of the 2022 10 x 10 Open Exhibition in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. Doors open at 10 am on Friday, September 9, and the show will be on display through Sunday, October 2.

The majority of AAN exhibitions feature work solely by AAN artist members; however, this annual 10 x 10 Open Exhibition is open for participation from the entire island community. Each participant may submit up to six pieces of work.

Now in its eighteen year, the 10 x 10 Open Exhibition is a popular and beloved AAN tradition, with every piece in the show measuring 10 inches by 10 inches. Work is hung in a grid-like pattern on the walls throughout the two-story gallery.

“It is always a fascinating show and amazing to see the many different ways an artist approaches a 10 x 10 canvas—all the same size, yet each piece has its own individual character,” said AAN Gallery Director Peter J. Greenhalgh. “The walls are literally covered in a mosaic pattern that is not often seen in galleries. It is a favorite among our artists as well as our visitors, who come to the gallery to see the works done by their friends, neighbors, and community members.”

A stone’s throw from Main Street, the award-winning Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery is one of the most comprehensive venues for local art, and this season the Artists Association is also exhibiting work at The Big Gallery, upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf.

The Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street, in the heart of Nantucket’s Cultural District, is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm & 2:30 to 5 pm, and Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm.

Opening on Friday, September 16 in The Big Gallery is Master Artists, Masterworks. This is a stunning exhibition of up to 65 exceptional works by AAN member artists, and Artistic Director Robert Frazier promises some surprises! All media will be included: paintings, photographs, sculpture, and more. An opening reception will be held in The Big Gallery on September 17 from 5 to 7 pm. Don’t miss this extraordinary display! The Big Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm upstairs at 12 Straight Wharf.
