Originally founded in 1930 by artist Maud Stumm, the Sidewalk Art Show has a long and colorful past. Historically, the Sidewalk Art Show was held in August over the period of a few days, open to professionals and amateurs alike. AAN took the reins of the event in 1960 featuring work by the likes of Robert Perrin, Colonel Julian Yates and countless others. Of Yates, longtime AAN artist member George Thomas recalls, “People lined up waiting for him to arrive with his canvases, which were usually wet. They were snatched up immediately…” In following years, some of which were sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the Sidewalk Art Show venues came to include locations such as Straight Wharf, the old town building, and the Nantucket Atheneum.
In addition to the display and sale of art, the Sidewalk Art Show will feature a children’s craft table, music, and other amusements. The event is sponsored by Cape Cod Five.
Founded in 1945, AAN’s mission is to foster the work of its member artists, present classes in the visual arts, and preserve Nantucket art in its historic Permanent Collection. “We are proud of our efforts to promote island artists and provide outstanding art education,” said Cecil Barron Jensen, AAN Executive Director.
