The New Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive has already hosted several classes.

Artbook Project Exhibition opening will be the first chance for the community to see AAN’s new Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive.

Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is pleased to announce the opening of the Nantucket Artbook Project Exhibition, on Friday, June 19 at 5-7 p.m. at the Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive. The Artbook Project is a community-based art project in which participants create their own art books.

“AAN gave out over 150 sketchbooks to anyone with an interest in participating. We asked them to take the books and use them to doodle, draw, paint, write — or simply be creative,” said adult arts program director Mary Emery Lacoursiere. “To date we’ve received over 70 art books back and they are stunning in their diversity and beauty. The participants are from around the world and range in all ages.”

The exhibition will showcase the Nantucket Artbook Project participants’ books, alongside sketchbooks from contemporary artist members and examples from the association’s historic Permanent Collection. “We are thrilled that the inaugural exhibition at the new Visual Arts Center on Amelia Drive will encompass (diverse ages and arts.) The aim of the project was to reflect the creative moment of today on Nantucket and judging from what we have received back, it is a success,” adds Lacoursiere. “Nantucket Artbook Project is about showcasing the island’s myriad creative talents. And, it’s not too late for those who wish to participate.”

Available to Nantucket year-round and seasonal residents, anyone who still wants to be a part of the Artbook Project may stop by the Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive anytime all summer to pick up a book. The exhibition stays up until Labor Day. Participants may also register at www.nantucketarts.org. There is a $5.00 entry fee. All participants will be thanked with a blank sketchbook of their own and other small items, following the return of the Nantucket Artbook Project book.
