The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is celebrating island life in a timely exhibition entitled In the Art of the Sea, opening with a reception on Friday June 12, from 6 to 8 pm in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington St. The exhibition will be on display until June 29.
“In the Art of the Sea is an art exhibition that celebrates our unique island perspective, both marine and maritime. The visual possibilities encompass imagery of our history, scenes of the wharves and harbor, boats from dories to regatta ships, marine mammals to shore birds, beachscapes to cloudscapes—any art with a bit of salt in its works,” said Robert Frazier, curator of exhibitions.
“We are looking forward to seeing what our artist members have for this themed-show,” AAN executive director Cecil Barron Jensen. “It will be a good chance for them to have fun with a rich Nantucket story and the island’s fascinating past with the sea.”
An added gallery feature during this exhibition will be the 4th Annual Plein Air Nantucket Festival held mid-way through the In the Art of the Sea exhibit, from June 18-21. This special adjunct of the gallery exhibition will showcase artists painting along the shores and harbor, from Steps Beach to Great Point. Upon completion, the new works created during The Plein Air Festival will be on disply in the gallery.
The Solo Show Spotlight Artist during In the Art of the Sea is Meredith Hanson, who will discuss her work in oils during our Spotlight Artist Talk on Saturday, June 13 at 10 am in the gallery, 19 Washington Street.
In the Art of the Sea will be on display from through June 29 at the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery, 19 Washington Street. The gallery is open Monday–Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm.
