Yesterdays Island, Todays Nantucket

The Winners Are…

First Place winner Jodi Fondell

For more than 30 years, we’ve been holding our annual Nantucket Photo Contest and giving cash prizes to the first and second place winners. In reviewing the hundreds of entries to this year’s contest, we were reminded of the many sun-drenched days and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets of 2024.

People from 15 US states entered the contest, and many submissions were from Nantucket residents. In addition to spectacular shots of sunrises and sunsets, participants sent in lots of photos of four-legged friends, of hydrangeas in full bloom, and of boats in the harbors. We received a few shots of Race Week’s Harbor Start and the island’s Fourth of July fun, but we didn’t get a single submission depicting Daffy Fest or Pops—these are big events with plenty of opportunities for fun photos: come on readers, submit a few for the 2025 contest!

This year, Jodi Fondell of Nantucket took first place with a photo of Nantucket Harbor shot from Easy Street last November. “I thought the harbor looked amazing this evening, with a full moon and spotlights from the Dreamland balcony,” she commented on her entry form. Our judges agree!

Second Place Winner Elaine Kaman

The photo of Willow at Brant Point by Elaine Kaman of Rye, New York was awarded second-place. “Our puppy, Willow, experienced Nantucket for the first time this summer and absolutely loved it! Our previous dog, Baisley (named after the character in Wendy Rouillard’s Nantucket Barnaby books) passed away in January at the age of 16. Nantucket was her favorite place in the world, as I think it will be for Willow.”

To the many photographers who did not receive a prize or honorable mention: don’t give up, there’s always another chance to win—we’re already accepting entries for the 2025 Nantucket Photo Contest. High resolution photos (the bigger, the better) can be emailed to ackphotocontest@gmail.com. Visit Nantucket. net or YesterdaysIsland.com: a photo you entered may appear on a cover or with an article.
