Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association Announces New Online Programming

STEM-based program on Nantucket

The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is sharing virtual STEM-based programming to educate and entertain during the stay-at-home order. Programming will be geared towards children and adults and will include science experiments, astronomy lectures, and educational videos.

During the month of April, Molly Zegans, Education Coordinator, will be conducting weekly Earth Day challenges. At the end of each week, Molly will host a virtual show and tell so everyone will be able to show off their work, ask questions, and chat with other scientists. On April 10, the show and tell focused on a litter pick up and building a sustainable city. Participants helped clean up the island by picking up litter outside. They also put their engineering skills to the test to build a sustainable city in their homes with recycling.

Each Wednesday, Molly will present a nature journal prompt to encourage interaction with and observation of the natural world. Prompts will be presented on our social media pages.

Dr. Regina Jorgenson speaks regularly on a podcast, “Looking Skyward,” with WCAI’s John Basile. The podcast is available on WCAI’s website. Follow along for the latest in astronomy news.

Virtual programming will be posted regularly on the MMA’s Youtube page, website, and social media accounts.

The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a private non-profit organization. Founded in 1902, the MMA works to preserve the legacy of Nantucket native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator, Maria Mitchell.

The Maria Mitchell Association operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, a research center, and preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell. A wide variety of science and history-related programming is offered throughout the year for people of all ages.
