Exploring “Learning without Leaving” for Nantucket Residents on March 24

"Learn without Leaving" Study results to be presented February 9.

Many on Nantucket believe that learning is at the center of our island community. reMain Nantucket has invested in that premise through their work at 56 Centre and 22 Federal, and they have collaborated with UMass Boston and the Nantucket Community School on programming in downtown Nantucket for several years.  Last year, reMain, UMass Boston and NCS together embarked on a joint research project to help define the educational needs of people on Nantucket

The consulting firm of EDR Group (Economic Development Research Group) was commissioned to study the educational needs of Nantucket’s year-round and seasonal residents.  Last fall over 650 people participated in surveys, and three focus groups were assembled and several stakeholder interviews were conducted.  This research focused on employer and residents’ educational needs on the island, which could include enrichment, workforce certifications, and credited courses.  EDR Group compiled this information and documented those needs in a Learn without Leaving Study, so that future programming can be targeted at areas of the greatest demand.

One of the goals is to encourage students of all ages and backgrounds, residents or just here for a few days or a few months, to come to Nantucket, patronize our shops and restaurants, and share their experiences as they learn and grow.

Originally scheduled for February 9, this presentation has been postponed until March 24, due to expected inclement weather.  The presentation will be held in the Dreamland on South Water Street, beginning at 5 pm.
