Hands-On, Unique New Kids’ Program Offered by MMA

From the first Native American inhabitants of the island, to the arrival of colonial settlers and the whaling industry, to the life of Maria Mitchell, America’s first professional female astronomer, Nantucket is rich in history. In the spirit of Maria Mitchell’s belief in learning by doing, “A Walk Through Nantucket” will immerse children in this history through hands-on experiences.

New this summer, this camp hosted by the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA )will include crafts, games, exploration of the island, and many more interactive activities all focusing on life on Nantucket during the 19th century. Children will make butter, create their own journals, weave small baskets, make yarn dolls, and marbleize paper, to name just a few of the many activities.

Designed for children ages 7-10, the program will be offered from July 8- 12 and from August 5-9. It will run from 10 am to 3 pm during both weeks. This program is limited to ten children and costs $400 for MMA Members and $475 for non-members. Each child should bring a snack, lots of water, and a lunch each day. Parents can pre-register their children for the program online at mariamitchell.org.

The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) is a private non-profit organization. Founded in 1902, the MMA works to preserve the legacy of Nantucket native astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator, Maria Mitchell. The Maria Mitchell Association operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, a research center, and preserves the historic birthplace of Maria Mitchell. A wide variety of science and history-related programming is offered throughout the year for people of all ages.
