Warner Bros. Pictures announced late on March 14, 2015, that the release of the film In the Heart of the Sea, Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard’s adaptation of Nantucket author Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book, has been rescheduled for December 2015, replacing the original release date of March 13, 2015. Now there’s more time to read (or re-read) Philbrick’s engrossing account of this real-life tragedy at sea. You can buy your copy at Mitchell’s Book Corner.
As such, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), Dreamland Theater and Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce regret to announce that the free advanced screening of the film that was scheduled for Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the Dreamland Theater must be cancelled until further notice.
According to industry sources, Ron Howard’s film is now due to be released on December 11, 2015. For a glimpse of what we’re waiting for, you can watch the trailer on our Nantucket.net Movie & Arts Page. Note: double click the video screen to start the video.
“I must admit that it was a bit surprising and a tad bittersweet for us to hear of the film’s new release date, as the NHA, the Dreamland and the Chamber just announced the contest for the free Nantucket community film screening a few days ago,” says NHA Director of Visitor Experience Marjan Shirzad. “That being said, we are still very excited for all of the In the Heart of the Sea and Essex-themed programs and events that will take place on Nantucket throughout the spring, summer and fall of 2015, as we all anticipate the film’s new release date. The NHA Whaling Museum’s new major exhibition will still open on April 24, 2015, and it will tell the story of the Essex in innovative and exciting ways. We are thrilled that the exhibition will carry over into the 2016 season, so our museum visitors will have plenty of opportunities to learn about the Essex, both before and after the film is released.”
The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), Dreamland Theater and Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce will continue to work with Warner Bros. to make alternate arrangements for another free community screening contest for Nantucket in December 2015 as scheduling permits. All existing contest entry ballots that were received in any of the three locations for the March 2015 screening will be saved until the new drawing in December. If (or when) the new contest does take place, those ballots will automatically be re-entered into the drawing.
