Fine Art Sale One Day Only

The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum’s Fine Art Sale will be held this Saturday, August 24, from 9 am to 12 noon at the Land Bank park on the corner of Francis and Union Streets.

Throughout the year, fine art has been gathered from estates and private donors across the island. This collection includes work by established artists and by newcomers—prints, oils, photography, watercolors, sketches, etchings in all sizes, framed and unframed, as well as statuary and mirrors. Now you don’t have to wait until November to update your décor at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum’s annual yard sale. Prices at this sale of fine art vary widely, so there is something for everyone.

All proceeds benefit the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum. The museum is dedicated to the education and preservation of this unique Nantucket art form. The yard sales and estate sales held through the year support museum exhibits, lecture series, and youth weaving classes. The 2019 featured exhibit is entitled Innovations in Nantucket Basketry: José Reyes and Beyond and showcases innovations in lightship baskets. From Jose Reyes’ lidded purse to contemporary baskets for the home, this display shows how basket makers have been pushing the boundaries of what defines a Nantucket lightship basket.

Executive Director Andrea Wulffleff says: “The Fine Art Sale features some beautiful works that just can’t wait for our November sale. It gives summer residents as well as those who live here year-round a chance to find that special piece of art to spruce up their homes.”

Because parking near the Land Bank park across from the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, additional parking is available at the Salt Marsh Center.
