Celebrating our 40th Anniversary!
Island Memories
This season is Yesterday’s Island’s 40th year publishing on Nantucket. We’ve seen many changes on the island in those four decades, and over the years we’ve made many changes to our newsmagazine.
As part of our anniversary celebration, we’re printing memories of the island in 1970 that have been shared with us by readers. Jo Ann Hubbard saw our request on the Yesterday’s Island Facebook page and was the very first to respond. We’d like to thank her for sending in her story, and we hope that it jogs some memories of others on-island 40 years ago.
If you have a memory of Nantucket Island in 1970 that you’d like to share with us and our readers, please email it to yi@nantucket.net or mail it to us at P.O. Box 626, Nantucket, MA 02554.
Wow, 40 years, doesn't seem possible!
I arrived on the island in September of 1969 just ahead of Margaret and Richard Daub. I met Margaret first as we both worked at the Jared Coffin House. What a great friend she turned out to be. It's sad how you lose touch with some people.
Yesterday's Island started up shortly afterwards. I never realized the amount of work that went into it, but it didn't take me long to realize what a great photographer Dick was. Dave's and my picture ended up on the cover of Yankee magazine thanks to him, and we didn't look too bad either.
So many things have changed on the island in the past 40 years, some good and some not so good. My years as owner of the Mad Hatter Restaurant gave me a great opportunity to meet so many super people. I probably could tell so many stories about our years there, but as they say what happens at the restaurant stays at the restaurant.
Jerry you must have a history of so many years with all your past issues. Your parents would be very proud of you.
Best wishes on your 40 years.
