Honoring Stewardship

Nantucket Preservation Trust Awards

Nantucket Preservation Trust For seven years, the Nantucket Preservation Trust has awarded Preservation Awards to recognize those who have advanced the cause of preservation through their renovation work and stewardship of Nantucket buildings and historic landscapes. The 2013 NPT’s awards highlight restorations, sensitive additions to historic buildings, and the work of island craftspeople and preservation-minded property owners. In addition to the annual awards, the NPT will provide a special award in excellence in preservation at the award ceremony at the Nantucket Yacht Club on June 20.

Michelle Elzay of Sparrow Designs is receiving the Architectural Preservation Award for the project at 43 Pine Street.
A Typical Nantucket House, circa 1808, 43 Pine Street retained a remarkable amount of original fabric, but needed major updating.  Michelle Elzay of Sparrow Designs gathered a group of artisans to complete the preservation work and ensured that original elements were properly restored while systems, baths, and kitchen were updated. The work included the restoration of the original bake oven.

St. Paul’s Church in Nantucket is receiving the John A. and Katherine A. Lodge Stewardship Award for their stained-glass restoration.
St. Paul’s stained glass windows date from the early to mid 20th century and illustrate the work of Tiffany, Connick, and Willet studios.  St. Paul’s has completed a careful restoration of the windows over several years using local contractors to identify and correct associated maintenance issues as well as nationally recognized stained-glass restoration experts to undertake glass and frame repair.

Ellen and Sam Phelan and Twig Perkins are receiving the Traditional Building Methods Award for their porch project at 65 Pleasant Street.
The circa 1835 house at 65 Pleasant Street was purchased by Samuel King in 1841 and remains in the family to the present day. Property owners Ellen and Sam Phelan used historic photographs to determine the design of a 19th century front porch which had been removed in the 1940s, and then hired local preservation carpenter Twig Perkins to replicate the elaborate design.

Angus and Deb MacLeod and the Johnson, Stockton and Jones families are receiving the Historical Renovation Award for the projects at 9, 12, 14, and 15 Pochick Street in Siasconset.
The four cottages at 9, 12, 14 and 15 Pochick Street in Sconset were part of the 1880s Underhill Cottages built to resemble the early fish shanties in the heart of the village. The work completed independently for the various home owners by Angus MaLeod Designs reflects the spirit of the original Underhill cottages and is also sensitive to the streetscape and surrounding structures.

The Nantucket Garden Club is receiving the Caroline A. Ellis Landscape Award for their beautification of the Main Street Horse Fountain.
The Main Street Fountain, originally designed as a horse trough, has been a symbol of Nantucket for many years. The fountain dates to the 1880s, and serves as a VFW memorial to Lt. Max Wagner, who was the only Nantucketer killed in the Spanish-American War.  For many years the Nantucket Garden Club has maintained the plantings and in so doing has brought attention to the historic structure and its need for restoration.

University of Florida’s Preservation Institute: Nantucket is receiving the Excellence in Preservation Award.
For over forty years the Preservation Institute: Nantucket has educated students in the preservation field, using the island as a classroom.  Their work has unveiled the history of many historic buildings and neighborhoods and has included the completion of Historic American Building Surveys, material conservation studies, and other preservation-related reports.   This year PI:N will begin a new project using laser technology to document historic Nantucket.

Founded in 1997, the Nantucket Preservation Trust is a not-for-profit, membership organization which serves as the island advocate for the preservation of Nantucket’s historic architecture, including building interiors, streetscapes and gardens.  NPT also offers educational programs throughout the year.
