A Rare View of Private Gardens

Sussex Garden
The Sussex Garden at 85 Main Street

On Thursday, June 20, from 10 am to 4 pm, the public is invited to visit six private gardens on Nantucket Island, during the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program.  Admission to each garden is $5.  The Open Day is rain or shine, and no reservations are required. A portion of the proceeds from this Open Day will also benefit Sustainable Nantucket.

Visitors may begin the self-guided tour at any of the following locations:

East Brick Garden at 93 Main Street – featuring extensive displays of hollyhocks, Casablanca lilies, and overflowing annuals

Maclean Garden at 2 Spring Street – organically maintained and includes a retired carousel as a whimsical focal point and a vegetable garden

Meredith Marshall’s Garden at 141 Main Street – featuring climbing roses, a border of boxwood and summer flowering perennials and bulbs, and a vine-draped pergola in the pool garden

Hilary Hedges Rayport’s Garden at 89 Main Street – with an informal parterre, rose-covered garden house, herbaceous border, stonework, and espaliered crabapple

The Sussex Garden at 85 Main Street – a cottage-style garden with heirloom foxgloves, peonies, roses, and herbs

The White Garden at 12 Coffin Street – a raised bed garden of white flowers and complementary textures, garden ornaments, and a koi pond

The Garden Conservancy introduced the Open Days program in 1995 as a means of introducing the public to gardening, providing easy access to outstanding examples of design and horticultural practice, and proving that exceptional American gardens are still being created.  The Open Days program is America’s only national private garden-visiting program, and is made possible by the work of hundreds of volunteers nationwide.  Visit the Garden Conservancy and its Open Days program at www.gardenconservancy.org
